Bella Italia
If you're looking for the definition of tired winners, you need to look no further than Monday morning in Aachen. After a night of clearing all the tents in the pouring rain at the iLumen European Solar Challenge, there is little time to recover. Sleeping bags are quickly dried and all things are stored, because our next destination is Imola in Italy. Here, the first Italian Solar Challenge takes place from the 26th to the 30th of September.
In a race that is only 8 hours long, the goal is to use the energy quickly but efficiently. Not an easy task with up to 7 percent incline on the course – but the Covestro Photon is still used to it from Morocco.
On Thursday, however, we first arrive a bit sleepy at our stopover in Stuttgart. There, we are greeted at Mercedes-Benz and get a tour of the development departments as well as the test centers. We also get to know the EQXX team, because the team at Mercedes is also striving for maximum efficiency in the powertrain and optimum aerodynamics.
On Sunday, we finally cross the Alps and hope for much better weather than at the ESC. Italy does not disappoint and welcomes us in Imola with 23 °C and sunshine.
The first task for the Photon on the Formula 1 track is a scrutineering session, where a team of engineers tests the roadworthiness of the Covestro Photon one more time. No problem for us and so we look forward to a much more relaxed day. The relaxation wears off a bit when we realize that the announced TechTalk is not intended for the general public, but rather will be held in front of Ducati engineers. A detailed technology overview is expected and the whole thing will be scored.
This is also handled flawlessly in an all-nighter, and we were able to convince the engineers of our concepts. It was fun to talk about the Covestro Photon at such a high level of technical detail.
We celebrate with a pizza in the old town of Imola and will now go to bed. Tomorrow, our next challenge will be Qualifying, before it gets serious on Thursday when we take the Covestro Photon to the track in Bella Italia.
Wenn man nach der Definition von müden Gewinnern sucht, dann muss man nicht weitersuchen als Montag morgen in Aachen. Nach einer Nacht im strömenden Regen werden alle Zelte bei der iLumen European Solar Challenge abgebaut und uns bleibt wenig Zeit für Erholung. Schlafsäcke werden schnell getrocknet und alle Sachen werden untergebracht, denn unser nächstes Ziel ist Imola in Italien. Hier findet vom 26. bis 30. September die erste Italian Solar Challenge statt.
In einem Solarrennen, welches nur 8 Stunden lang ist, geht es darum die Energie schnell, aber effizient zu verbrauchen. Keine einfache Aufgabe bei bis zu 7 Prozent Steigung auf der Strecke – aber das ist unser Covestro Photon ja schon aus Marokko gewöhnt.
Wir kommen Donnerstag allerdings erst etwas verschlafen bei unserem Zwischenziel in Stuttgart an. Hier sind wir zu Besuch bei Mercedes-Benz und bekommen eine Führung durch deren Entwicklungsabteilungen und Testzentren. Zudem lernen wir das Team von EQXX kennen, denn auch das Team bei Mercedes strebt nach maximaler Effizienz im Antriebsstrang.
Am Sonntag geht es endlich über die Alpen und wir hoffen auf deutlich besseres Wetter als bei der iESC. Italien enttäuscht nicht und begrüßt uns in Imola mit 23 °C und Sonnenschein.
Die erste Aufgabe für den Covestro Photon auf der Formel-1-Strecke ist ein Scrutineering, wo ein Team aus Ingenieuren die Fahrtauglichkeit des Covestro Photon ein weiteres Mal prüft. Kein Problem für uns und so sehen wir schnell einem entspannten Tag entgegen. Die Entspannung lässt ein wenig nach, als wir feststellen, dass der angekündigte TechTalk nicht etwa für die Allgemeinheit gedacht ist, sondern vielmehr vor Ingenieuren von Ducati gehört wird. Es wird eine ausführliche Technologieübersicht erwartet und mit Punkten bewertet.
Auch das wird in einer nächtlichen Aktion einwandfrei bewältigt und wir konnten die Ingenieure von unseren Konzepten überzeugen. Es hat Spaß gemacht über dem Covestro Photon auf einem so hohen technischen Detailgrad zu sprechen.
Wir feiern das Ganze mit einer Pizza in der Altstadt von Imola und fallen jetzt müde ins Bett. Morgen gibt es mit dem Qualifying die nächste Herausforderung, bevor es am Donnerstag ernst wird und wir in Bella Italia auf der Rennstrecke antreten.
