First Italian Solar Challenge Ever! - Chapter Three | SpotLight
The Italian Solar Challenge was taking place for the first time ever. That's one reason why it was a challenge as we did not have any data and experience to this point. In addition, the Formula 1 race track of Imola was steeper and the corners were tighter. SpotLight. A three-episode documentary series about all our challenges and races of this year!
The Italian Solar Challenge consists of two different disciplines. One is of course the solar endurance race, and the other one is the Tech Talk.
In the so-called Tech Talk, the solar teams have 30 minutes of presentation time to convince the jury of their innovative projects. Here the ideas behind the technical concept of the solar car are explained and presented. During the Tech Talk, everything about the car is revealed to a jury of Bugatti and Ferrari engineers. At the end, there is a prize for the best presentation.
The solar race will take place on the Formula 1 track, which is almost 5 km long. Before the race, the solar cars will go through scrutineering and qualifying, which are necessary to participate in the race and determine the starting position.
The next day the race starts with a so-called flying start. In the same order as the qualifying, the solar cars first drive one lap behind the lead car before the race starts. The race track has 17 curves, which are a real challenge for the racer. But the incline of the track also pushes the efficient solar cars to their limits.
The entire race consists of two two-hour stints. Between these two race times, there is a break in which the solar car is allowed to charge in the sun. In the end, the team with the most laps wins the race!
The Italian Solar Challenge is a solar race organized by the MES (Motosport Engineering Society) and took place for the first time in early October 2022.
We won the Italy Solar Challenge with the Covestro Photon. In the first edition of the race we started as the favorites, but you first have to finish in order to finish first. That’s why our day starts at 5 a.m., so that we have enough time before the race starts at 9 a.m. We prepare the Covestro Photon for rain this time too and the chassis puts on the good tires.
