Double victory!
A sleepless night! But the results are worth it. The Covestro Photon is still in first place and the Covestro Sonnenwagen has also fought its way up to third place. Henning, from the structural department, is happy after his early shift at 5 a.m.: “It seems we have a chance to win this race now!“.
Two hours before the end of the race, our biggest competitor, Solar Team Twente, (by that time in 2nd place) must end the race early due to moisture in the solar vehicle. Now the Covestro Sonnenwagen must make up 15 laps in the last 90 minutes to secure second place in the race. The entire team is excited because the present fourth-place finisher, ITU from Turkey, is also breathing down our necks and is getting faster every lap. But the gap is too big. We continue to speed up our laps, allowing the Covestro Sonnenwagen to catch up with Twente and secure second place.
The team lines up at the barriers and cheers on our two winners in their final laps. At 1pm, the Covestro Photon and Covestro Sonnenwagen cross the finish line together. We are European champions and European runner-up!
Afterwards, our solar cars drive a lap of honor accompanied by the cheers of all the teams. Team photos are taken and we bring our solar cars dry into the pit box. Another cry of joy goes up when we open the Covestro Photon and everything inside has remained completely dry. As an unofficial trophy, the electrical engineers retrieve a dry diaper, underlining this achievement. Our Covestro Photon was therefore tightly sealed during the 24 hours of almost continuous rain! Finally, the award ceremony takes place. After the event organizers have given their speeches, the winners are asked to come on stage one after the other and the trophies are handed over.
Since it started raining again, we quickly pack up all our solar cars, workshop and tents and drive back to Aachen.Tired but overjoyed we bring home the double victory for Team Sonnenwagen Aachen and look forward to our next solar race in Italy next weekend.
During the 24 hours, the Covestro Photon completed 285 laps (1140 km) without any incidents, followed by the Covestro Sonnenwagen with 258 laps (1032 km). This is the largest contribution to the new record for the most laps driven, during the 24-hour race. In total, all solar cars together drove 3310 laps, which combines to a total of 13,276 km.
“I think this is about so much more than every single Person, that is standing here. This is about everyone, that has been working in this team since 2015 giving their blood, sweat, and tears to make this happen. Building a structure, that we are working with. Team 2021, this is a redemption for the performance of the Photon in Morocco. Team 2023, I think we show that we mean business, let´s win Australia as well. Let´s go!”
Eine schlaflose Nacht! Aber das Ergebnis lohnt sich. Der Covestro Photon ist immer noch auf Platz eins und auch der Covestro Sonnenwagen hat sich auf den dritten Platz vorgekämpft. Henning, aus der Struktur, freut sich nach seiner Frühschicht um 5 Uhr morgens, „It seems we have a chance to win this race now!”.
Zwei Stunden vor Rennende muss unser größter Konkurrent „Twente“ (derzeit auf Platz 2) das Rennen frühzeitig aufgrund von Feuchtigkeit im Solarfahrzeug, beenden. Jetzt muss der Covestro Sonnenwagen 15 Runden in den letzten 90 Minuten aufholen, um sich den zweiten Platz im Rennen zu sichern. Das gesamte Team ist gespannt, denn auch der derzeit vierte Platz, ITU aus der Türkei, sitzt uns im Nacken und wird jede Runde schneller. Doch der Abstand zu uns ist zu groß. Doch auch wir beschleunigen unsere Runden, sodass der Covestro Sonnenwagen die Runden zu Twente aufholt und sich den zweiten Platz sichert.
Das Team stellt sich an die Absperrungen und jubelt unseren beiden Siegern auf ihren letzten Runden zu. Um 13:00 fahren der Covestro Photon und der Covestro Sonnenwagen gemeinsam über die Ziellinie. Wir sind Europameister und Vizeeuropameister!
Im Anschluss drehen unsere Sonnenwagen eine Ehrenrunde begleitet vom Jubel aller Teams. Teamfotos werden gemacht und wir bringen unsere Sonnenwagen trocken in die Pitbox. Ein weiterer Freudenschrei ertönt, als wir den Covestro Photon öffnen, und alles im Inneren komplett trocken geblieben ist. Als inoffiziellen Pokal holen die Elektrotechniker eine trocken geblieben Windel aus dem Solarwagen. Unser Covestro Photon war also während der 24 Stunden bei fast durchgängigen Regen dicht abgeschlossen!
Zum Schluss findet die Siegerehrung statt. Nachdem der Event Organizers gehalten hat, werden die Sieger nacheinander auf die Bühne gebeten und die Pokale werden übergeben. Da wieder ein Regen eingesetzt hat, packen wir schnell alle unsere Sonnenwagen, Werkstatt und Zelte ein und fahren zurück nach Aachen.
Müde, aber überglücklich bringen wir so den Doppelsieg für Team Sonnenwagen Aachen nachhause und freuen uns auf das nächste Solarrennen nächstes Wochenende in Italien.
