The Scrutineering
Does it even work? – Scrutineering, the last challenge before the challenge
Two days before the start of the race the time to test and to work on the car had to end: as prior to every solar challenge, an independent board of judges conducted several tests on the solar race cars. All systems – electrical, mechanical and structural – were examined and tested in detail, in order to grant fairness for all teams as well as the safety of drivers. The Scrutineering is divided into two parts, static and dynamic scrutineering. During the dynamic scrutineering the cars’ driving performance and the safety procedures such as getting out of the car quickly are tested. All our drivers were well prepared.
A very important test that is conducted for the first time this year concerns the size of the cockpit. The goal of the test is to ensure that all drivers fit comfortably into the cockpit and safety is not neglected in favour of the smallest and lightest drivers’ cabin. It is conducted by the most unbribable judge of all – PVC Patrick. Patrick is a tall, handsome guy who might seem distant at first but, trust me, he is very nice once you get to know him. Besides – as could be assumed from his name – he is made of PVC.
Even though we needed to do some small changes, like slightly adjusting the height of the wheels, the Covestro Photon passed this last very crucial test and is now ready for the real challenge – 2500 km through the Moroccan countryside.
More than competition – the solar family
Of course, competition is high between the teams’ tents near Stade Adrar here in Agadir, as also the other teams are (mistakenly) convinced to have built the best solar race car. But still there is some time to get in touch, discuss technical and organizational issues and have some fun. For example, playing football on the nearby training area, enjoying the good weather and cruising around on the tandem bike of Team Twente. Everybody is grateful to be here and be part of the challenge and this amazing Solar Family.
Sunny greetings from the whole team!
