Upgrading our Solar Car?

Chapter One | SpotLight

Reliability is really crucial for solar cars. That's why we started early to improve and upgrade the Covestro Photon. Testing is one of the most important aspects of it, to really have our car perform at its best during the races.

SpotLight. A three-episode documentary series about all our challenges and races of this year!

Sun Powered 24h Race

Chapter Two | SpotLight

The European Solar Challenge is an extreme 24h race. Racing at night and during heavy rain with hyper-efficient solar cars like the Covestro Photon is possible! But so it is challenging.

The Challenge.

The iLumen European Solar Challenge is the world's only 24-hour endurance race for solar cars, held every two years on the former Formel 1 circuit of Circuit Zolder in Belgium. On the racetrack, the solar cars develop with low power consumption and optimized aerodynamics to their full potential in one day. During the Challenge, each team is allowed a maximum of 2 charging stops to recharge the battery even at night.

The aim of the race is not only to cover the greatest possible distance within 24 hours, but also to win with innovations in vehicle development, the most consistent 8 lap times, and the fastest lap time. 20 racing teams from all over the world come together here to compete against each other in this endurance race. The race´s start is similar to the one on the 24-hour race at Le Mans.

The Racetrack.

4010 m long with challenging course, curves and chicanes on the former Formula 1 track in Zolder. At the location of the track in Belgium we also expect classic Belgian September weather with little sun and rain.

Le Mans Start.

Quite classic for a 24 hour race, the iESC also starts with a Le Mans start where all drivers get into the car at the same time and drive off. We are starting this year not only with the Covestro Photon but also with the Covestro Sonnenwagen. For us, competing with two cars means efficient driver arrangement and team managing during the race.
