Let’s race!
The morning before the race: The race start is approaching and the mood in the team is full of anticipation, but a little nervousness is also spreading. Final work is done on the solar cars and the battery is charging fully. At eleven o’clock the solar car is covered rainproof, and now we are waiting for the Le Mans start at 13:00.
At half-past twelve, the time has finally come! The solar cars drive onto the pitlane in starting order. Thanks to our very good performance in Dynamic Scrutineering, the Covestro Photon is in pole position.
"3-2-1! We started the European Solar Challenge, go go go!", shouted the event organizer. With much applause and cheering, the teams cheer on their drivers at 01:00 PM sharp, sprinting to the solar car, getting in, and speeding off one after the other. The Covestro Sonnenwagen immediately shoots to the front from the fifth starting position, and the Covestro Photon also pulls ahead. In the first hour, the Covestro Photon leads, followed by the Covestro Sonnenwagen in the second position.
After three hours of racing, the weather is still sunny and cloudy, and the forecast also looks dry. Therefore, the driving strategy decides to bring the Covestro Photon into the pit box for a tire change. A quarter of an hour later the official race control announces: All solar cars must drive with rain tires from now on. How annoying! Again, we have to stop with the Covestro Photon and change the just changed tires back. Back on the race track our driver Felix reports a vibration in the whole car starting from the front right. So: We must go back to the pit box. Here the front right tire is changed again. Fortunately, the Covestro Photon is running normally again, and we can continue our laps.
After the at least somewhat sunny start, persistent rain now sets in and several solar cars spin in the critical curves. Our drivers have to slow down and drive more carefully.
Around nine o'clock in the evening, first the Covestro Sonnenwagen and then also the Covestro Photon comes into the pit box to recharge the batteries. When the Covestro Photon is at the charging station, we, unfortunately, discover that the tire on the engine wheel has a flat. So, after charging we can’t go back to the pit but must push the Covestro Photon back into the pit box. After a quick tire change, we are back on the racetrack. The Covestro Photon is in second place and Covestro Sonnenwagen in fourth place, both with the battery charged and Agoria (the Belgian solar team) heckled.
Der Morgen vor dem Rennen: Der Rennstart rückt näher und die Stimmung im Team ist voller Vorfreude, aber auch etwas Nervosität breitet sich aus. Letzte Arbeiten an den Solarautos werden getätigt und die Batterie wird voll aufgeladen. Um elf Uhr wird das Solarauto regendicht abgedeckt, jetzt warten wir auf den Le-Mans-Start um 13:00.
Um halb eins ist es endlich soweit! Die Solarautos fahren in Startreinfolge auf die Pitlane. Dank unserer sehr guten Performance in dem Dynamic Scrutineering, ist der Covestro Photon in Pole Position.
„3-2-1! We started the European Solar Challenge, go go go!“ Mit viel Applaus und Jubel, feuern die Teams um Punkt 13:00 ihre Fahrer an, die zum Solarauto sprinten, einsteigen und nacheinander losdüsen. Der Covestro Sonnenwagen schießt von der siebten Startposition sofort nach vorne und auch der Covestro Photon fährt vorne mit. In der ersten Stunde führt der Covestro Photon, gefolgt vom Covestro Sonnenwagen an zweiter Position.
Nach drei Stunden Rennzeit ist das Wetter weiterhin sonnig bewölkt und auch der Wetterbericht sieht trocken aus. Daher entscheidet sich die Fahrstrategie dazu den Covestro Photon für einen Reifenwechsel in die Pitbox zu holen. Eine viertel Stunde später kommt dann die Ansage von der offiziellen Rennleitung: Alle Solarautos müssen ab jetzt mit Regenreifen fahren. Wie ärgerlich! Wieder müssen wir mit dem Covestro Photon anhalten und die gerade erst gewechselten Reifen wieder wechseln. Zurück auf der Rennstrecke berichtet unser Fahrer Felix von einer Vibration im ganzen Auto ausgehend von vorne rechts. Also: Wir müssen zurück in die Pitbox. Hier wird der vordere rechte Reifen nochmal ausgewechselt. Und zum Glück fährt der Covestro Photon wieder normal und wir können unsere Runden fortführen. Nach dem zumindest etwas sonnigen Start setzt nun andauernder Regen ein und mehrere Solarautos spinnen sich in den kritischen Kurven. Unsere Fahrer müssen langsamer fahren und mehr Acht geben in den Kurven.
Gegen neun Uhr abends kommen zuerst der Covestro Sonnenwagen und anschließend auch der Covestro Photon in die Pitbox um die Batterien aufzuladen. Als der Covestro Photon an der Ladestation ist, müssen wir leider feststellen, dass der Reifen am Motor-Rad einen Platten hat. Nach dem Laden können wir also leider nicht zurück auf die Pit sondern müssen den Covestro Photon zurück in die Pitbox schieben. Nach einem schnellen Reifenwechsel sind wir wieder auf der Rennstrecke. Der Covestro Photon ist auf dem zweiten Platz und Covestro Sonnenwagen auf dem vierten Platz, beide mit geladener Batterie und Agoria (das belgische Solarteam) in die Zange genommen.
