We are Italian Champions!
We are Italian Champions! We won the Italian Solar Challenge with the Covestro Photon. In the first edition of the race we started as the favorites, but you first have to finish in order to finish first. That’s why our day starts at 5 a.m., so that we have enough time before the race starts at 9 a.m. We prepare the Covestro Photon for rain this time too and the chassis puts on the good tires.
The race starts with a flying start and so the Photon drives its rounds in the first stint. Our drivers Jan and Felix drive a total of 47 laps without any problems.
During the lunch break we are allowed to charge our cars behind the pitbox with the solar lid. This is especially fun in the Italian sun and so we feed in up to 1000 W at peak. With a filled battery we start at 3 p.m. into the second stint. Kevin also does his laps and we are increasingly sure that we might be in it for the win.
However, as we want to switch to Tobi, he suddenly has no more power. Questioning faces push the Covestro Photon into the pitbox.
Our electrical engineers get to work insanely fast. Niklas, responsible for our on-board computer, is able to pinpoint the problem within minutes. The on-board computer PCB has given up. Exactly at this moment, the weeks of work that went into spare parts pay off. A completely new PCB is installed, and we are quickly back on track.
Until 7 p.m., we continue our round and finish the race with 89 laps. This is a beautiful ending for three emotional and exhausting race weeks!
Wir sind italienische Meister! Auch den Sieg bei der Italian Solar Challenge haben wir mit dem Covestro Photon eingefahren.
In der ersten Edition des Rennens sind wir zwar als Favorit ins Rennen gegangen, aber man muss ein Rennen zuerst zu Ende fahren, damit man am Ende auch Erster ist. Deswegen startet unser Tag auch schon um 5 Uhr morgens, damit wir genügend Zeit vor dem Rennstart um 9 Uhr haben.
Wir bereiten den Covestro Photon auch dieses Mal auf Regen vor und das Fahrwerk zieht unsere besten Reifen auf.
Das Rennen startet mit einem Flying Start und so beginnt der Photon im ersten Stint seine Runden zu fahren. Unsere Fahrer Jan und Felix fahren insgesamt 47 Runden ohne Probleme.
In der Mittagspause dürfen wir unsere Fahrzeuge hinter der Pitbox mit dem Solardeckel aufladen. Das macht in der italienischen Sonne besonders Spaß und so speisen wir in der Spitze bis zu 1000 W ein. Mit einer gefüllten Batterie starten wir um 15:00 Uhr in den zweiten Stint. Auch Kevin fährt seine Runden ab und wir sind uns immer sicherer, dass es gut für uns aussieht.
Als wir dann allerdings auf Tobi wechseln möchten hat er plötzlich in der Pitlane keine Energie mehr. Fragende Gesichter schieben den Covestro Photon in die Pitbox. Unsere Elektrotechniker machen sich wahnsinnig schnell, aber bedacht, ans Werk. Niklas, verantwortlich für unseren Bordcomputer, kann innerhalb von Minuten das Problem ausmachen. Die Bordcomputer-Platine hat den Geist aufgegeben. Genau in diesem Moment lohnen sich die Wochen an Arbeit, die in Ersatzteile geflossen sind. Eine komplett neue BC-Platine wird eingebaut und wir sind schnell wieder auf der Strecke.
Bis 19:00 fahren wir weiter unsere Runde ab und haben den Sieg zu diesem Zeitpunkt mit insgesamt 89 Runden in der Tasche. Ein schönes Ende für drei emotionale und anstrengende Rennwochen, die sich wirklich gelohnt haben!
